StimGlove
A downloadable project
With this project I seek to expand the capabilities of my body to self-soothe and regulate my autistic nervous system. When dis-regulated, I will often instinctively move my hands to soothe myself. An alignment between external senses and internal mental/emotional state provides a sense of stability. I also find certain repetitive sounds to be helpful in calming my senses.
Therefore, I seek to combine sound and hand movement using a technology-enhanced glove containing a tilt sensor, which connects via Arduino to Max/MSP, and responds to my hand movements with sound. The Max/MSP code enables me to upload and utilize any .wav file, of any length, and even to play sounds in combination, at varying volumes. Repetitive hand motions will replay the file, and a single hand motion can be used to start a longer clip. Using Audacity software, I have created several recordings which I personally find to be soothing, and have uploaded these into the system, with the option to add more at any time. It is also possible to use any consistent frequency tone, as built into Max.
Wearing the glove, I am able to receive instant external feedback to my internal state, thus enhancing my ability to quickly calm my nervous system.
